People who live in the north-east of England are most likely to be in debt, according to new research.

People who live in the north-east of England are most likely to be in debt, according to new research.

Credit report service MyCallcredit has released research, which found that people living in urban conurbations are the most in debt, with those in the north-east topping the league.

Uxbridge comes first out of all the places in the UK as the most in debt town. Meanwhile Dorchester comes a smug last.

Those in the south-west are most likely to escape the debt burden: for better personal finances, people would do well to move to Bristol, Exeter or Plymouth.

MyCallcredit director Alison Nicholson said that she hoped the group's research would encourage lenders to lend more responsibly.

"The vast majority of people are still up to date with their credit commitments and managing their finances well but there is concern over levels of debt and pressure on lenders to lend responsibly - our research helps lenders fulfil this responsibility to their customers," she said.
