Internet banking customers 'wising up' to phishing

Consumers who use internet banking are becoming increasingly wise to the attempts of fraudsters to steal their personal information, it has been revealed.

New research from the Association of Payment Clearing Services (Apacs) shows that 82 per cent of internet banking customers either delete or ignore phishing emails.

This is an increase on last year - when just 75 per cent took such action - and comes despite a rise in the number of phishing emails being sent.

Richard Brown, chief executive of Moneynet.co.uk, said "Phishing is the curse of our modern age. Clearly, thousands could be at risk from these clever scams. Consumers need to be constantly vigilant."

The Apacs research also reveals that while internet banking customers are more aware of potential fraud, one in three still do not have anti-spyware software installed on their computer.

Barclays announced recently that it would provide all customers signed up to internet banking with free security software to protect against spyware as well as viruses.
