Car gadgets 'distracting motorists'

In-car gadgets distract almost three quarters of motorists, new research has revealed.
Motorists are being distracted by the growing number of gadgets in their vehicles, according to a survey by the used car website motors.co.uk.The research revealed that 70.6 per cent of drivers feel accessories such as satellite navigation systems, CD players and steering wheel control buttons put them off their driving
It also showed that 52.9 per cent of respondents would like to see fewer non-essential add-ons in their cars to prevent their attention being diverted from the road.
This could lead to accidents that require motorists to make a claim on their car insurance.
Having expensive gadgets in the vehicle may also make it harder for drivers to secure cheap car insurance premiums.
Katie Armitage, marketing manager at motors.co.uk said: "On the back of these findings we are urging manufacturers to go back to basics and to consider the safety of drivers and how they use the add-ons with the emphasis being placed on not losing concentration."
Meanwhile, the Institute of Advanced Motorists is warning drivers to be aware of road hazards common in the autumn months, such as fallen leaves and surface water.
