Life insurance industry 'requires Hepatitis C guidelines'

A financial advisor is urging the life insurance industry to adopt fair policies for dealing with Hepatitis C sufferers.

New guidelines are required to standardise the way in which life insurance providers deal with people suffering from Hepatitis C, it has been claimed.

According to the managing director of the independent financial advisory group Compass, life insurance firms have differing views on how applicants with the disease should be treated, FT Adviser reports.

Chris Morgan said his company contacted the Association of British Insurers (ABI) and found that there are no industry-wide rules in place covering underwriting practices for Hep C sufferers.

He urged the life assurance industry to stop "burying its head in the sand" and to adopt fair and non-obtrusive policies similar to those used when dealing with applicants who have HIV.

Commenting, a spokesperson for the ABI said: "Insurers are acutely aware of the issues around diseases like Hep C and do treat customers sensitively and with respect."

Research carried out by Axa revealed that 57 per cent of people believe they would be refused a policy or find it more difficult to secure cheap life insurance if they were to disclose full details of their medical conditions and lifestyle habits.
