Cameras fail to deter speeding drivers
Despite being worried about the dangers of speeding, the majority of drivers exceed the speed limit themselves, new research shows.
The country's network of speed cameras fails to deter almost three-quarters of drivers, according to a new survey by The Co-operative Insurance.Just 27 per cent of drivers polled said they never break the speed limit, while 19 per cent confessed to speeding at least once a day.
However, while three-quarters admitted to driving too fast, the same number said they worry about the dangers of other road users speeding.
David Neave, director of general insurance at The Co-operative Insurance, said: "People often don't think about the dangers of driving a few miles an hour over the limit. But that can mean the difference between having a safe journey or a collision."
As well as putting their lives at risk, drivers who do speed could also compromise their cheap life insurance as penalty points and accidents can lead to higher premiums.
Meanwhile, the used car website motors.co.uk has found that 70 per cent of drivers are put off by gadgets such as satellite navigation systems and CD players in their vehicles.
