Young drivers 'making expensive car choices'
Car insurance will be cheaper for smaller cars, young drivers are being told.
Young drivers are missing out on cheap car insurance by trying to insure modified vehicles or those with large engines, which will undoubtedly cost them more.According to a survey by Gocompare.com, drivers aged 17 to 21 are the biggest users of price comparison sites, suggesting that many are eager to get a good deal.
However, somewhat paradoxically, 63 per cent of them are quoting for cars with engine sizes greater than 1250cc or with modifications, making cover more expensive.
Hayley Parsons, chief executive of Gocompare.com, said: "While young drivers are savvy about using comparison sites to get a better deal on their insurance, the majority still haven't got the message that small is beautiful when it comes to choosing a car."
As well as opting for a smaller engine and avoiding modifications, she also advised younger drivers to consider taking the Pass Plus training course, which could entitle them to cheap car insurance.
And according to the insurance provider RIAS, a good no claims bonus can cut the cost of cover significantly, so young drivers could be well advised to start building theirs up by driving as safely as possible.
