Lack of insurance 'puts Brits at risk'

Research released today by Barclays has shown that significant numbers of people in the UK have no life insurance or critical illness cover, a situation the bank describes as "worrying".

Over half the people surveyed have no life insurance and three-quarters have no critical illness cover.

The study also revealed that as the credit crunch causes people to cut back on spending, life insurance and serious illness cover slip down their list of priorities.

Alison Tattersall, head of customer and proposition at Barclays Financial Planning, said that this was understandable because often people did not want to talk about death or serious injury.

However, she warned: "People must consider […] what would happen if they were unable to work, or their dependents' situation if they died, it would be far worse than any concerns they currently have."

A recent survey by Prudential revealed that the credit crunch is also making people cut back on pension contributions, which the pension provider warned could have a significant impact on their long-term future.
