Norwich Union issues festive crime warning

Norwich Union has issued a warning to its customers to check their insurance after research by the insurer found that the festive time of year is the worst for burglaries.

According to Norwich Union's data, New Year's Eve is the worst day of the year for break-ins, with houses 25 per cent more likely to be burgled than on any other day.

While Christmas Day and Boxing Day have some of the lowest crime rates of the year, Norwich Union found that insurance claims following Christmas burglaries are for an average of £1,600, which is higher than normal.

Greg Gladwell, director of household insurance at Norwich Union, said: "You may be very proud of those perfectly wrapped presents but they are also enticing to an opportunistic burglar, so keep them out of sight from the outside world."

Last month a study by Abbey Home Insurance revealed that the number of domestic break-ins is likely to rise as the recession begins to bite.
