Investigation slams some cheap car insurance sellers

An investigation by a consumer magazine has found that certain price comparison websites do not return accurate quotes to customers searching for cheap car insurance.
Which? magazine conducted a study of several of the sites and found that some did not display the excess charges they had stipulated and a few even adjusted the charges in order to return cheaper quotes. One researcher for the magazine found that while searching for car insurance in the north of England with a voluntary excess of £250, the cheapest quote on Gocompare.com's results page came with a £470 excess.
Jess Ross, editor of Which?, said: "Comparison sites sell themselves on having all the information in one place and being easy to use, but we found that the way they display excess charges means it's difficult for people to make informed decisions."
Recently a BBC Panorama investigation criticised some price comparison websites that charge insurers a commission for passing on business, claiming that it could bias the results they display.
