Abbey: Romance is a casualty of the credit crunch

Abbey has claimed that the recession will affect people's romantic plans for Valentine's Day.

Abbey has claimed that romance is the latest casualty of the credit crunch after a survey it conducted revealed that Brits will be spending less on their loved ones this Valentine's Day.

The bank found that more than half of Brits are planning to celebrate Valentine's Day but nearly four in ten will be spending less on their partners than in previous years to save money.

Cutting back on spending is estimated to save people an average of £42 each, but Abbey's research found that nearly one-fifth of men are worried about what their partner's reaction to the cutbacks may be.

Susan Voase, an Abbey Banking spokesperson, commented: "Cash-strapped Britons will be hoping that it's still the thought that counts as they turn to more cost-effective ways to show their love this Valentine's Day."

Birmingham Midshires conducted research recently which showed that Brits are raiding their savings accounts less often and cutting back on the amount they spend on luxuries.
