Home help faces redundancy during recession, says survey

Domestic helpers such as cleaners and odd jobs people may be out of work because of the recession, a survey has found.

Legal & General has conducted a survey which reveals that many UK households are adopting a DIY approach to domestic work during the recession, which could leave home helpers out of a job.

The insurance and pension provider found that 45 per cent of the households which employed some kind of domestic help last year are cutting back, with the number of homeowners employing an odd jobs person falling by 86 per cent.

Nearly half of the households which had previously employed a window cleaner said they have stopped because of the recession, while 29 per cent said they have told their domestic cleaner to stop coming to work.

Garry Skelton, marketing director at Legal & General's general insurance business, said: "A significant number of people will be rolling up their sleeves and doing more work around the house in the next few months."

Recent figures released by the Office of for National Statistics revealed that nearly two million Brits are currently unemployed.
