One in five motorists driving without car insurance

One in five motorists in the UK has got behind the wheel of a car without the appropriate vehicle insurance, according to a new survey.

Driving without motor vehicle insurance may be illegal, by that has not stopped one in five motorists getting behind the wheel of a car they are not insured to drive, according to a new poll.

The survey, conducted by moneysupermarket.com, revealed that one in ten motorists have driven their own car without up-to-date auto insurance.

On top of this, eight per cent of the people surveyed by the website admitted to having driven someone else's car when they were not insured to do so.

Steve Sweeney, head of motor insurance at moneysupermarket.com, described the figures as "worrying".

He added: "Driving without insurance, no matter how far the distance, is against the law. Anyone caught doing so could face hefty penalties which include a £200 on-the-spot fine and six points on their licence."

Recent research by the AA suggested that now may be the best time to buy new car insurance, as many insurers keep their prices static in the first quarter of the year to encourage renewals.
