AA car insurance finds vehicle theft begins at home

Research by the AA, a provider of cheap car insurance, has revealed that thousands of vehicles are stolen in the UK because burglars have found keys lying around in the house.
The AA has conducted research which shows that criminals are able to steal thousands of cars in the UK every year because they take the keys, either from the house or from car owners in person.Home secretary Jacqui Smith suggested that more than 15,700 cars disappeared last year after the keys were stolen during a burglary and a further 2,900 motorists were mugged, pickpocketed or carjacked for their vehicle keys.
The AA warned people who want to avoid shelling out for the excess on their cheap car insurance to keep an eye on their keys, as modern cars - especially upmarket models - are often impossible to steal without them.
He added: "Fewer than 20 per cent of stolen cars are under five years old - and most of them can't be stolen without the keys."
Recently, research by Abbey revealed that the number of domestic break-ins is likely to rise during the recession as increased poverty makes people in the UK desperate.
