Home insurance provider warns of wasp infestations

A home insurance provider has urged households to avoid dealing with wasp and hornet nests they may find on their property as the insects are at their most prevalent this week.
Home insurance provider Sheilas' Wheels has said that the last week in July is the time when wasps and hornets are most prevalent, which could lead to unwanted infestations in properties. However, those attempting to remove any nests should seek professional help before attempting the task themselves, according to the firm.
Research by the home insurance provider found that 33 per cent of households would take it upon themselves to rid their property of wasps or hornets, despite the cost and danger involved.
It is thought that the results of the survey show that households are trying to save money by being brave and tackling any nests they find themselves as getting an expert out could cost between £35 and £100, Sheilas' Wheels claims.
The firm's home insurance policy for pests costs £1.65 a month and means that any wasp nests will be dealt with by a professional for free.
This ensures that a hefty bill is avoided along with the risk of calling out a "cowboy pest controller" to deal with any infestations, the company says.
Jacky Brown, spokesperson for Sheilas' Wheels home insurance, warned: "It's that time of year again when wasps and hornet's nests become a nuisance to homeowners across the UK. With some nests housing colonies of hundreds of stinging insects, DIY nest removal should never be attempted by the untrained.
"Sheilas' Wheels pest cover offers peace of mind to homeowners that they can receive a fast, professional and reliable pest control service at a low cost," she added.
Home insurance advice website Confused.com recently warned that the appearance of more flies and other pests may be brought about by the warm weather and told households to get suitable cover.
A survey conducted by the company found that 30 per cent of Brits had experienced an increase in the number of pests they have seen, but several home insurance policies can lend a helping hand.
