'Choose quality over cheap car insurance'

Car insurance policy holders looking to save money on their motor cover should be making sure they choose a quality deal over a cheap one, the British Insurance Brokers' Association (BIBA) has claimed.
While many drivers will be looking to cut back on their spending during the recession, the British Insurance Brokers' Association (BIBA) has warned that consumers should be looking for quality over cheap car insurance. Those concerned about the rising prices of car insurance in recent months may be tempted to turn to the internet to find the cheapest deals they can, but the organisation urged drivers to make sure they are fully covered.
Recent research by the AA showed that brokers offering cheap car insurance are disappearing, with premiums rising 3.5 per cent between April and June and 11 per cent over the past year.
The BIBA wants motorists to seek advice from their car insurance broker if they are considering switching their provider or altering the amount of cover received in order to save money.
Many people choose financial advice websites to try and find as cheap car insurance as possible, but the organisation warned that these sites do not take into account certain factors and make assumptions about others.
Peter Staddon, head of technical services at BIBA, said: "People should first of all speak to their insurance broker, then look at their no claims bonus and see what they can do to protect it.
"They should then look at maybe the car group rating, especially if you are a younger driver, look at the type of car and any modifications you have made," he added.
Another industry figure recently said that the cost of car insurance premiums can be reduced by locking up the vehicle at night.
Ian Crowder, spokesperson for car insurance provider the AA, said that many people's garages are "full of junk" which could be removed or sold in order to make vehicles safer at night and allow car insurance policyholders to take advantage of any discounts.
