Tips on how to get cheap home insurance offered

Those looking to save some money on their home insurance policy during the recession may be interested in some advice being given by one financial advice website.

Home insurance customers looking to get the best deal on a new policy have been handed some advice by one financial website.

Money.co.uk gave a run down of the ten best tips for households to make sure they get a cheap home insurance deal to protect the items in the their property and the building itself.

Most firms offer a renewal quote once the policy comes to the end of its term, but the website recommends looking elsewhere before blindly accepting the first offer, as households may be able to find cheap home insurance elsewhere.

Paying policies off in one lump sum can also reduce the cost of home cover by avoiding the levy imposed by some companies for using monthly direct debits.

Those looking for cheap home insurance should also take advantage of any discounts, Money.co.uk says, and customers can often get better deals by shopping online.

Other recommendations include foregoing add-ons, which can be expensive and sometimes unnecessary, increasing the excess on the home insurance, and making sure the company knows of things such as neighbourhood watch schemes which can further reduce premiums.

A spokesperson for Money.co.uk said: "Although not legally essential, many would agree that home insurance is vital cover to have in place.

"As well as protecting your personal valuables in the case of a burglary, it will provide reassurance that should the unexpected happen such as a flood or fire, you won’t be completely out of pocket," they continued.

Money Saving Expert recently claimed the new home insurance deal being offered by Tesco Finance is not as good as the firm makes it out to be.

The financial advice website warned that the 50 per cent discount Tesco says it is offering is not actually as big a saving as it sounds because of an existing online deal.
