Home contents insurance advised for festival-goers

With V Festival this weekend (August 22nd-23rd) and the Leeds and Reading events next week rounding off the festival season, the Post Office has advised music-lovers to remember their home insurance.

Those rounding up this year's festival season with the summer events of Leeds and Reading this weekend (August 29th-31st) should take out home contents insurance to protect their belongings while enjoying their favourite bands.

Research by the Post Office shows that 39 per cent of Brits have been or are planning to go to an outdoor event such as a festival, taking up to £600-worth of equipment and cash with them, which it advises can be protected with home contents insurance.

It calculates that nine per cent of those spending the summer enjoying at least one festival have had their weekend spoiled by theft or loss of expensive equipment, but despite this people are still planning to take their Blackberrys, digital cameras and mobile phones with them.

Some 75 per cent even plan to take £100 in cash with them, but the Post Office has urged them to make sure this is covered under home contents insurance.

Richard Pennant-Jones, head of general insurance at the Post Office, said: "It is easy for people to get caught up in the fun of the festival, which is why they need to try and protect their belongings.

"They should check their home insurance contents policy to be clear what personal possessions are covered automatically and whether they need to get extra cover," he added.

Students who received their A-level results last week (August 20th) were also advised to get the most suitable home insurance.

Confused.com recommended that those heading to university in September look at the many options designed especially for students, with some providers even offering home contents insurance which covers lost keys and library books.
