Pet owners urged to take action this Guy Fawkes Night

Pet owners could end up making pet insurance claims unless they fail to look after their cats and dogs on Guy Fawkes Night.

Saga has offered pet owners advice on how to protect their cats and dogs during the Guy Fawkes celebrations.

Yesterday (November 4th), confused.com suggested that up to three million dog could be affected by loud fireworks and revelry on Bonfire Night, resulting in a number of expensive trips to the vets and increased pet insurance quotes.

However, Saga believes that the risk of a pet insurance claim can be minimised by following the advice of dog and cat owners polled by Opinium at the end of September.

Staying in to keep pets company was the most advocated option, with turning up the TV or radio to drown out the noise of fireworks also recommended as a way of keeping pets calm on the evening of November 5th.

Giving pets treats or extra exercise during the day were other traditional choices, while alternative remedies such as massage and aromatherapy are increasing in popularity.

"Saga commissioned the study as it wanted to highlight the various methods available to cat and dog owners to help keep their four-legged friends safe and calm during the firework season," a spokesperson for Saga Pet Insurance commented, adding that alternative solutions are far more healthy than giving pets treats.

Research conducted by the RSPCA shows up to 45 per cent of dogs are affected by anxiety when they hear fireworks, further underlining the importance of securing a pet insurance quote.
