Tesco, Sainsbury's offer Modern Warfare 2 deals

Supermarkets such as Tesco and Sainsbury's are leading the competition to drive down the cost of the new Call of Duty installment, Modern Warfare 2.

Gamers looking to snap up Activision's long-awaited new release, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, for cheap bargain prices may want to visit their local Tesco or Sainsbury's supermarkets.

A price war has erupted over the game, for which Activision has set a recommended retail cost of £54.99, between high street department stores as they attempt to undercut online sellers with deals.

Sainsbury's are selling the first-person shooter for £26, while Tesco is giving fans the chance to get it for £25 when bought with another game.

Available for the Xbox 360, Playstation 3 and PC, wholesalers such as Makro are also rushing to take advantage of what has been described as "2009's most anticipated video game" by offering an online discount voucher code to get it for just £20.

Modern Warfare 2 was launched at midnight on Monday evening (November 9th) and people rushed to get their hands on a copy of the game, but they may have missed out on a cheap bargain if they went to Asda, which is retailing it at £32.

At the same time, online consumers may have been disappointed at Amazon's £32 deal and Game and HMV shoppers faced £44.99 price tags.

The game reportedly sold 4.7 million copies on its first day in the UK and US, grossing $310 million for Activision, more than the Batman film The Dark Knight made at the box office on its opening weekend.

Players take up the role of a soldier in peace-keeping missions against Russian terrorists, with the game rendering global locations such as Afghanistan, Rio de Janeiro, Siberia and Washington DC in high-definition graphics.
