Good Energy reduces utility bills with payments

The first energy tariff in the UK to pay back customers with microgeneration systems has been launched.

Households that install microgeneration systems, such as solar panels, on their properties may be able to reduce the cost of their utility bills thanks to a new scheme from Good Energy.

Microgeneration technology allows homeowners to produce their own energy and those who make more than enough to power their properties will be able to sell the excess back to the provider.

Recommended by consumer watchdog Which?, the Good Energy HotROCs tariff pays up to 4.5 pence per kilowatt-hour of power, which is put back into the National Grid by solar water heating panel users.

The firm is also currently looking at ways to introduce heat pumps, biomass and micro-CHP options to the scheme, which will help consumers with these systems to get money off their utility bills.

Juliet Davenport, chief executive of Good Energy, said: "We have increased our number of solar thermal generating customers to 270, each saving on average half a tonne of CO2.

"This is the first, and the only, renewable heat incentive offered by any supplier. We have set a benchmark for the industry and for Government while also financially supporting our customers to reduce their own emissions."

OVO Energy recently sprinted ahead in the race to bring down the cost of utility bills by announcing a new tariff that will cost customers less than £1,000 a year.

As smaller gas and electricity suppliers attempt to beat the big six out of the market, OVO introduced a deal which costs consumers £921 annually, making it the cheapest provider in 13 out of the 14 regions for energy.
