London offering cheap deals on Christmas gifts

London has emerged as the 20th most expensive city out of 33 others worldwide, meaning that Christmas deals may be on offer.

The run-up to Christmas has officially started as London businesses slash prices to kickstart consumer spending during the festive period.

The capital city has overtaken several other destinations popular for Christmas shopping in the past year, dropping from second most expensive in the world to 20th out of 33, according to new research by PriceRunner International.

In the last 12 months, the price of a Nintendo Wii in Britain has dropped from £179.99 to £166.65, meaning that UK consumers could grab a cheap deal on the games consoles, the Telegraph reports.

Oslo remained the most expensive city for Christmas shopping for the third year in a row, while Mumbai was the cheapest out of all the locations studied.

Marc Thomas, spokesperson for PriceRunner, told the newspaper: "While Paris is still the fourth most expensive place on the planet, New York is now the fourth cheapest - and remarkably, even prices in London have dropped below the global average.

"London is now significantly cheaper than many competitive destinations, including Paris, Dublin, Amsterdam and Berlin."

However, a recent survey from the Post Office claimed that New York is the best place to go to grab some cheap deals for Christmas.

According to the report, a typical range of designer gifts is currently 25 per cent cheaper in the Big Apple than in London, due to the strength of the pound against the dollar and a reduction in prices caused by the continued effects of the recession in the country.
