British Gas cuts cost of utility bills

A new tariff from British Gas has reduced the lowest available price for utility bills in seven regions of the UK.

A new tariff from British Gas has emerged as a worthy competitor to current market leader OVO Energy by reducing the cost of utility bills for seven regions of the UK.

Those areas served by East Midlands Electricity, Manweb, Scottish Hydro-Electric, Scottish Power, Swalec or Sweb can enjoy the cheap rates of the company's Websaver Tariff 5, which replaces its previous Websaver 4 option.

Designed for those with average energy consumption and the ability to pay by direct debit, the online-only package tracks standard British Gas utility bill costs and promises to undercut them by at least six per cent until the end of February 2011.

Separate electricity and gas options are available, as well as both on the same utility bill, and those who take up the offer must remain with the company until June 30th 2010 to avoid termination fees.

Gareth Kloet, head of utilities at Confused.com, said: "This tariff has a broad appeal as more and more people are opting for the saving-rich route of paying by direct debit.

"Coming in at top of the best buy tables in seven out of 14 regions … this is an attractive prospect for those looking to make savings for Christmas and protect themselves from future price rises in the new year."

It was recently announced that energy suppliers are to give all 26 million homes in the UK the chance to have a smart meter fitted, widely viewed as one way to save money on utility bills, as well as providing a step towards a more efficient grid system.

While current utility bills often include an estimated price for usage, the Department of Energy and Climate Change claimed that households will save up to £28 per year with the devices due to improved accuracy.
