Customers should not forget their consumer rights this Christmas, the government warns.
The Department of Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS) has released some information for shoppers unhappy with any Christmas gifts they have bought as part of a new consumer rights advice campaign.The scheme is to remind Brits that any purchases made over the festive period must still adhere to three golden rules – they should match any descriptions, be fit for purpose and be of satisfactory quality.
In conjunction with the Trading Standards Institute and the Office of Fair Trading, among other consumer rights advice groups, the Know Your Rights campaign involves Facebook and Twitter pages, as well as its own website.
The site contains facts about faulty goods, buying online, unwanted gifts and cheap bargains in seasonal sales.
Visitors can also test themselves on their consumer rights knowledge.
Kevin Brennan, consumer minister, recently spoke at the National Consumer Federation's Consumer Congress in London, stating: "There is a lot of protection in place to support consumers, but we want to significantly raise awareness of this protection and of consumer rights in general.
"You are much more likely to get a fair deal, save money and get the right result if you are aware of your rights. This is especially important at Christmas when most people are spending money both on gifts and in the sales."
Consumer rights advice group Consumer Focus recently found that 55 per cent of Brits have experienced the postman dropping a 'Sorry you were out' card through the door, despite the fact that they were in, the Daily Mail reported.
