Advice given for budget weddings

Couples hoping to have a budget wedding should not be tempted to look at expensive dresses if they know they cannot afford them.

Couples hoping to hold a budget wedding as the recession keeps its grip on the nation's finances have been offered some tips by one newspaper.

The Daily Comet spoke to various marriage experts to find out the best ways to save money on the special day, after revealing the extent of spending that US brides-to-be are willing to make.

It cited Brides.com's 2009 American Wedding Study, which found that the average cost of a wedding in the US is $28,082 (£17,160) - an amount which could be similar in the UK.

To hold a budget wedding, the newspaper recommended that future wives avoid getting too attached to expensive dresses by focusing on cheaper alternatives.

Renting a tent to erect at home or at an outside venue could also be a good option for saving money, as an evening buffet wedding at a hotel ball room could double the costs.

"If you're willing to put in the time, you can make beautiful floral arrangements yourself and for much less than you’d pay if you were to go with a fancy florist," the newspaper added.

It continued: "Hiring a DJ is much less expensive than hiring a live band, but how about going with music you've already paid for? Make a playlist on your iPod and plug it into the stereo system you'll use."

Guardian journalist Rachel Holmes recently wrote in the Life & Style section of the newspaper that she attempted to hold an extravagant and quirky event for her wedding day, while also saving money by taking care of the budget for the special occasion.

By searching around on the internet for their budget wedding, Ms Holmes and her husband-to-be avoided the costly hotels and self-catering options available and opted for an open space to host the event.
