New First:utility tariff 'ideal' for central heating cover customers

Confused.com has talked up the value of a new energy tariff launched by First:utility.

Central heating cover customers could save as much as £20 per year by selecting a new energy tariff, it was suggested today (January 19th).

According to research by Confused.com, the cheapest basic deal for households at present is npower's Sign Online 17 tariff, which should offer average annual fuel bills of £907.

This figure compares favourably with special tariffs from providers such as British Gas (£929), Eon (£940), Scottish Power (£931), Scottish and Southern (£929), OVO Energy (£921) and EDF (£944).

However, Confused.com notes that First:utility, whose new iSave2 tariff was found to cost £921 per year on average, offers savvy consumers the opportunity to reduce that total to £901.

Customers who submit their energy meter readings in a bid to minimise the "estimated bills roulette" are rewarded with a £5 discount and this amount can be claimed up to four times per year.

"First:utility has been consistently competitive since its inception into the market place and this is another winning tariff from them," said Gareth Kloet, head of energy at Confused.com.

"In its basic form this is certainly a tariff to consider, although not the best available in most regions.

"However, if customers take the responsibility to read their meters on a quarterly basis, the discount provided means that not only is it the cheapest tariff currently available in seven regions in the UK, but it'll also help them to pay for the energy they use, rather than an estimate."

The Office for National Statistics confirmed in its latest Family Spending report last week that Britons spent an average of £18.90 per week on gas and electricity bills in 2008, up from £17.20 in 2007.
