Discount website predicts Asda will win online supermarket competition with Tesco.
A discount website has revealed that Asda.co.uk, the supermarket’s online shopping service, could soon usurp Tesco.com if customer trends continue.Myvouchercodes.co.uk said that Tesco's website had the majority share of online grocery shoppers with 41 per cent, compared to just 27 per cent for Asda.co.uk.
The sales figures for January 2010, however, show that the gap between the two companies is shortening, with Tesco having a 36 per cent share, while Asda enjoyed a 31 per cent market share.
Mark Pearson, Myvouchercodes.co.uk's managing director, claimed that Asda will become the biggest player in the online shopping sector within six months.
He explained: "I predict that come June 2010, if consumer trends continue, Asda will be the dominant online supermarket. The digital battle lines are drawn and I don’t expect Tesco to go down without a fight.
"Both Tesco and Asda have fantastic online offerings, making it easy for consumers to find and buy their groceries online. It is a small wonder that these two are the ones vying for the top spot on the basis of their services."
In addition, the report found that Sainbury's was the third most popular online supermarket with 13 per cent of the market share.
Myvouchercodes.co.uk is one of the UK's biggest voucher sites and, rather than providing consumers with traditional high street vouchers, the site gives discounts in the form of promotional codes, e-vouchers and discount codes.
