Moneysupermarket.com warns of inflated energy bill costs

Scott Byrom says that consumers can expect an expensive energy bill this year.

The website has warned consumers to expect an expensive energy bill because of the recent cold weather.

Britons are bracing themselves for their highest winter heating bills ever after the cold snap bloated quarterly energy costs by as much as 20 per cent, new research has revealed.

According to a report by moneysupermarket.com, the sub-zero temperatures in January added £123 to the average bill for the year.

As a consequence, bill payers have been urged to be more energy efficient and search for the most attractive tariffs on the UK market.

Scott Byrom, utilities manager at moneysupermarket.com, stated that the upcoming energy bill is likely to be the biggest that most people have ever had to deal with.

He added: "Many people will be getting a hefty quarterly statement landing on their doormat at any time that is if they haven't already received this nasty surprise.

"With the backdrop of recession, a very cold winter and higher than usual energy consumption, people need to seriously think about how they will pay for their usage."

In addition, the research found that lowering the household temperature by one degree Celsius could save as much as ten per cent on the annual heating bill.

Britons have also been advised to invest in double glazing, change to energy-saving light bulbs and close all curtains at dusk to insulate the heat.

Meanwhile, the untypically cold weather has led to insurance companies issuing advice to homeowners regarding the maintenance of their property.

Homeowners have been told that they need central heating cover in place because the cold weather can cause damage to boilers.
