The Liberal Democrats have drawn attention to the problems faced by endowment mortgage holders whose policies face a shortfall.
Recent research has shown that up to six million people will be hit by an endowment shortfall. This problem has been extremely damaging for the financial services sector and undermined confidence in endowments.
"The number of people facing endowment shortfalls is deeply worrying," Lib Dem Treasury spokesman Dr Vince Cable said.
"Growing numbers will not be able to meet mortgage repayment obligations."
