The record profit posted by Barclays today is good news for British consumers, the bank has claimed.
Barclays saw a 20 per cent year on year rise in profits in the 12 months to the end of 2004.Critics have accused the high street giant of profiteering, as the record earnings follow similarly impressive results from its key rivals.
Barclays chief executive John Varley told the Today programme this morning that British consumers got a good deal from their banks.
"The simple fact is that the cost of banking in Britain is a lot lower than the cost of banking in most other developed countries in the world and what customers in Britain have is choice and they have a lot of people competing for their business," he said.
Last year HSBC announced record annual profits for a UK bank.
