Homeowners who repeatedly remortgage their property could be saving thousands.

The research by Purely Mortgages showed that £10,000 could be saved over ten years by switching a £100,000 interest-only mortgage every two years.

According to the study though, 60 percent of people who bought their property over a decade ago have never remortgaged.

Mark Chilton, the chief executive of Purely Mortgages, said: "The majority of endowment policies were sold in the 1980s, yet worryingly it is people who bought around this time that have lost most by not remortgaging.

"These borrowers will not only have paid more for their mortgage than necessary but may still be facing an endowment shortfall," he added.

The survey found that 3.6 million homeowners would only remortgage if they moved house, and that 85 per cent of people over the age of 50 would not automatically remortgage.
