If Britons put more planning into the financial side of their summer holidays, they could save as much as £750 million, Nationwide Building Society suggests.
The Society estimates that by shopping around for the best deals on debit and credit cards and travel insurance, British holidaymakers will save money.
The average Briton on holiday abroad spends an average £75 on charges for using their debit or credit card, it has been revealed.
Nationwide pointed out that many card providers charge 2.75 per cent on purchases or cash withdrawals outside the UK's borders. Customers of Nationwide, however, do not get charged for using these services abroad.
Travel insurance supplied by travel agents is costing a third of Britons up to £150 more than what they would have paid if they shopped around for the best deal.
"It is a shame that holidaymakers allow holes to be burnt in their wallets while they are in the sun," commented Nationwide's executive director Stuart Bernau, saying that tour operators' travel insurance is "considerably more expensive than Nationwide’s".
Mr Bernau also said that those who do not pack a card by Nationwide, could end up paying unnecessary fees and charges to their bank.
