BRITS IGNORANT OVER SPEEDING

Article date: 05/08/2005 : 12:25:18

Almost 95 per cent of UK drivers have knowingly broken the speed limit, according to research from insurance giant Direct Line.

The study found that young drivers are most likely to speed, with a third of those under 30 saying that they regularly drive too fast.

In response to the findings a statement from Direct Line said that speeding is not only dangerous, but can also hit drivers in the pocket.

Drivers caught doing more than 85mph on the motorway can receive a £2,500 fine and points on their license, which can increase insurance premiums.

While those doing over 100mph could face an automatic ban.

In spite of these substantial punishments half of the survey's respondents did not know that the dual carriageway speed limit is 70 mph.

"The lack of knowledge amongst motorists is very surprising – particularly that so many don't even know the speed limits on some UK roads," said Emma Holyer, Direct Line's car insurance spokeswoman.

"Not only is speeding dangerous but as many motorists know to their expense, speed cameras exist across the UK and the points on your licence and fine incurred can be hefty," she concluded.
