British schoolchildren are carrying more than £54 million of personal audio devices to school, states new research by Halifax Home Insurance.

A staggering one-quarter of kids carry an iPod, Mp3 player or other music device with them when they set off to school each morning.

These consumer durables don’t come cheap and the Halifax is urging parents to ensure they are adequately covered in their contents insurance.

Vicky Emmott, senior underwriter commented: "These items are high value and – due to their size – relatively easy to lose or steal, it’s important that parents ensure the correct insurance is in place to protect their children's belongings."

Last year alone the company received more than 20,000 claims relating to the theft of personal belongings. Additionally Halifax Insurance states the average claim for items lost outside the home has increase by over 40 per cent.
