Car insurance covers cost of vandalism

CAR INSURANCE COVERS COST OF VANDALISM

Article date: 30/09/2005 : 09:49:34

The news that one in seven cars has been vandalised in the last 12 months highlights the need for adequate car insurance.

A new study by Direct Line reveals that the most common damage is having the bodywork keyed (53 per cent) followed by smashed windows (33 per cent) and a bent antenna (26 per cent).

Other, more serious damage includes punctured tyres and having a vehicle graffitied.

Emma Holyer, Direct Line’s motor spokesperson warned: " Many motorists believe this type of crime only happens in inner cities or car parks whereas your car is actually most at risk parked in a quiet dark street away from any street lamps.

"We would urge motorists to use their garage or driveway if they have one and always try to park in well-lit open areas. In addition, make sure any car parks you use have good lighting and are well supervised."

Of the motorists polled by the majority of motorists (93 per cent) unsurprisingly said they were very worried about crime and 79 per cent said they were anxious about parking their car in certain cities.

London topped the list of cities most feared for vandalism followed by Liverpool and Manchester.
