Uninsured drives take heed

UNINSURED DRIVES TAKE HEED

Article date: 30/09/2005 : 11:52:13

Anyone foolish enough to get behind the wheel without adequate cover should be warned that they will soon face a fine of at least £60.

New laws being announced by the government will enable police forces across the country to access insurance company records.

At the moment officers have to catch someone in the act, but the new law means owning a car without either insuring it or officially declaring it is not being used, is punishable with a fine. Police forces will also have the authority seize vehicles and even crush them.

Statistically uninsured drivers are more likely to have accidents and the BBC reports that the estimated one million offenders cost law-abiding motorists an extra £30 in insurance premiums.

Police forces will also use cameras that can read number plates, similar to the ones used to enforce London's congestion zone, to trap uninsured motorists.
