Investors will be pleased to note that the FTSE All Share Index delivered a rise in total returns for shareholders.
The total rise of 3.4 per cent was a substantial rise on the 2.8 per cent gain on September last year.
Investors in mining stock saw the best level of return with the sector yielding a total shareholder return (TSR) of 16 per cent. Forestry and paper performed least well with a TSR of only minus nine per cent each.
John Bearman, head of UK equities, said: "September saw an all time high for FTSE 250 whilst the FTSE 100 reached a four year peak. Both indices were buoyed by rumoured and actual mergers and acquisitions activity and the expectation that this may continue towards the end of the year.
"The markets were also driven higher by oil and resources stocks, which benefited from higher oil prices."
Among individual company performances, people with Excel stock would have been pleased with a 23 per cent increase in TSR. Partygaming was the worst performer with a TSR of –44 per cent.
