The appeal of internet banking has crossed age, gender, social and geographical divides, according to online bank cahoot.
A survey carried out by Future Foundation on behalf of the firm suggests that the last five years has seen the profile of the average online banker change as the number of women and older people using the service has climbed.
The popularity of online banking has enjoyed such a boost that half of internet users over the age of 50 now bank online. Of this group 60 per cent have access to the internet.
The increase in women using the service has meant that the gender spilt is now almost equal, with the average user being a suburban, middle aged mother or father aged 35 to 44.
John Goddard, managing director of cahoots, commented: "Five years ago, when cahoot first launched, the internet and the people who used it were very different.
"In a relatively short space of time, online banking has become the first choice for many people regardless of gender, age, socio-economic background or location."
