DRIVERS URGED TO SHOP AROUND

Article date: 04/10/2005 : 17:35:17

A leading insurance expert has urged motorists to ensure they shop around for the best car insurance in order to avoid footing the bill for uninsured car owners.

The government is introducing new measures to tackle the number of people who own cars that do not have insurance.

It has been estimated that one in twenty UK drivers own uninsured vehicles at any one time.

Previously, it was solely an offence to drive an uninsured car, but new government legislation aims to make it an offence to be the registered owner of a motor vehicle that does not have insurance.

The Road Safety Bill which is currently going through Parliament could lead to on-the-spot fines of £60 if taxed cars are found to be without insurance.

But Richard Mason, director of insuresupermarket.com, thinks the legislation may not come into force soon enough to benefit current innocent car owners.

"These new proposals are good news for innocent motorists; however, they're not scheduled to become law until at least the end of 2006," he said.

"Until then, the threat of uninsured driving will continue to grow, meaning law-abiding motorists will still be carrying all the risk, including paying higher and higher insurance premiums, making it ever more important to shop around when you're purchasing your car insurance."
