WORLD CUP CREDIT CARD SPENDING BONANZA EXPECTED

Article date: 11/10/2005 : 17:09:30

The English nation could spend an incredible £2 billion in support of the England team in next year's football World Cup in Germany, according to estimate figures.

The forecast from NatWest credit cards in association with MasterCard shows that 24 million people who will follow the team's fortunes during the tournament could end up spending an average of £87.26.

This ranges from the fans out in Germany, to people spending while they watch games in the pub, to the huge amount of people buying replica England shirts and other merchandise.

The figures also calculate that approximately 50,000 England fans going to watch the games live could rack up their credit card spending to as much as a total of £300 million on travel, accommodation and match tickets, not including spending money.

Even if England do not get out of the group stages fans could still spend up to £897 million supporting their country and they will probably spend more to commiserate and while watching the rest of the matches.
