State Benefits for Pensioners

Back to State Pensions.

£5billion is an astonishing amount of money, and yet it is estimated that just under half of pensioners in the UK are missing out on claiming it in addition to their pension benefits. This is despite the fact that claiming it could lift them out of the poverty they find themselves living in.

Some pensioners just aren't aware of the benefits they can claim, others are too proud to claim them, but charities for the elderley are urging pensioners to get their claims in despite their misgivings.

What State Benefits for Pensioners are there?

In addition to the state pension, claims can be made for:

Pension Credits for Pensioners

Falling into two categories, there are guaranteed credits and savings credits. The guaranteed credit tops up the weekly income of a state pensioner to a minimum of £136.20 for individuals or £202.40 for a couple. The savings credits are aimed at those pensioners over 65 who have a small amount of savings but live on low incomes.

Housing benefit for Pensioners

If you pay rent and your income is below a s[pecified level pensioners may be eligible for Housing Benefit. This is claimed through the local council and can help with housing costs and service charges on shared communal areas.

Council Tax benefit for Pensioners

If a pensioner qualifies for the guaranteed pension credit they chould also get this benefit. Pensioners with low savings may also qualify and the beenfit is worked out based on the income of your whole household. Claims are made through your local council offices.

Attendance Allowance for Pensioners

If a pensioner requires assistance with their personal care they may qualify for attendance allowance. Pensioners do not have to have a carer, the money is tax free and can be spent however the pensioner wishes.

Winter Fuel Payments for Pensioners

Winter Fuel Payments are paid to people aged over 60 in a tax free lump sum. If you get a state pension it is paid automatically to you, HOWEVER, for those over 60 who don't get a state benefit, a claim form must be completed and submitted.

The pkaces to claim any of these benefits differ between them, however, your local Age Concern branch will be able to advise you further. There is also a pension credit helpline, telephone 0800 991 234 (this is a FREE call), and you can also contact your local council.
